Obscure Answer

An Aeolipile
Special thanks to George P.
from Ottawa for the tip.
According to a NASA kid's site on the history of flight at http://www.ueet.nasa.gov/StudentSite/historyofflight.html,
an aeolipile is an ancient Greek invention demonstrating
one of the first examples of steam power.
This was another of Mad's seemingly endless examples of
repeating obscure images or words from issue to issue for
no apparent reason but to add texture or confusion to
an already dense magazine.
Below are five examples from five different issues.
